What Grows In Your Garden

Wolfgang is one of the legendary rock bands here in the Philippines. With their first self-titled album "Wolfgang" the band has evolved since then. Though Wolfgang had released 5 studio-albums (Wolfgang, Semenelin, Wurm, Serve In Silence and Black Mantra), the first one is my favorite. You can hear fans singing with the band every time a song is being played from their first album. I was still in high school when Wolfgang dominated the charts in DWLA 105.9.

WolfgangBasti Artadi (vocals), Mon Legaspi (bass), Wolf Gemora (drums), Manuel Legarda (guitars) are the Wolfgang members. Most of the songs from their first album (and almost all of their albums) are written in english. I'm assuming that Basti is the one primarily the one who put lyrics in their songs. Basti looks like a Phil-Am with his tisoy looks. Basti and Manuel Legarda are my favorite "wolves" :) Basti is an excellent vocalist with his powerful voice and stage presence while Manuel was able to lift Wolfgang with his noble task of single-handedly doing the guitar works. The guitar leads of Wolfgang songs are simply awesome not to mention the guitar riffs as well.

Obviously, one of their greatest influence is Metallica.

I remember when Wolfgang performed at GMA Network's 2000 today Global Millennium Day Broadcast. Me and my brother wait until almost 5am to wait for Wolfgang's performance on that New Year event. As far as I can remember, the drummer and the guitarist was not around but was temporarily replaced by the drummer of Barbie's Cradle and guitarist Perf De Castro (ex-Rivermaya, Francism). The two performed with Wolfgang very well.

Arise, Halik Ni Hudas and Natutulog Kong Mundo are the popular favorites from their first album.
What Grows In Your Garden from their first album is one of my favorite Wolfgang songs. It obviously talks about the saying "What you reap is what you sow" just like what is written in the bible...

Be not deceived; God is not mocked:
for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Galatians 6:7

The song deals about the "sister" who is hoping to have a good harvest/fruit from the garden with too many grass affecting her plants. The "sister" is hoping a rain will wash the garden that turned to be infested with too many unwanted inhabitants.

The song can also be a metaphor to our lives. If we let our lives to be filled by hatred and sins, our garden(lives) will not be beautiful as we have hoped for but will be filled with grass and other unwanted inhabitants. Our flowers in our garden will be killed by grass and other parasites. Once it happen, we can only pray that a rain will wash our garden away.

...Opening your eyes to the stars just to pray
Hoping more rain will wash your garden away...

What Grows In Your Garden
Wolfgang

Well now the rain washed back yesterday
Bringing thoughts of wasted time
And the water it brought
flowed swiftly through your mind
Opening your eyes to the stars just to pray
Hoping more rain will wash your garden away

But your flowers just bloom
Ever bright ever proud
Screaming I hate you so loud
Sister! sister tell me will you ever bow
To what grows in your garden now

Yes the weeds of consequence get more day by day
Of decisions you have better made
Paper flowers sparkle by an old tree butt
Just remember even paper flowers cut

Your garden shakes with the wind
But it will not fall down
Scattering seeds all around
Sister! sister tell me will you ever bow
To what grows in your garden now

Somewhere on the landscape lies
A place next to your heart
But the grass grows wide and even
And soon that too will be torn apart
Over bounds sprinkling seeds to the ground.

Your garden shakes with the wind
But it will not fall down
Scattering seeds all around
Sister! sister tell me will you ever bow
To what grows in your garden now
