And Justice For All

Movie

Upon seeing the DVD of And Justice For All movie starring Al Pacino on one of the mall in USA during of my trip there, I already thought that it is related to the And Justice For All album/song of Metallica. I immediately bought it and watch it immediately at the apartment. I was correct. The movie is about the corrupt legal system. The movie started by the voices of some children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

I pledge allegiance
to the flag of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty
...and justice for all.

I love this 1979 classic movie because of its moral value wants to teach. There's a specific scene between Arthur Kirkland (Al Pacino) when he visited his grandfather Sam Kirkland on an elderly house. I think it was Sam who contantly reminds Arthur Kirkland about being an honest lawyer which leads to the memorable ending scene of "YOU'RE out of order! YOU'RE out of order! THE WHOLE TRIAL is out of order! THEY'RE out of order!"

Sam Kirkland: Are you a good lawyer? Are you honest?
Arthur Kirkland: Well, I don't know. Being honest doesn't have much to do with being a lawyer, Grandpa.
Sam Kirkland: If you're not honest, you got nothing.

Oh man! Don't you love those lines. Every tuesday of the week, Arthur Kirkland visits Sam because he love him so much. Sam took care of Arthur and helped him to put him on law school. Probably, this helps Arthur to keep his moral integrity. Arthur has a lawyer-partner-friend Jay Porter. Jay Porter is a defense lawyer who went nuts/crazy after an event to his career occurred. It started with the following scene... Jay Porter came knocking 2:00 in the morning at Arthur's apartment. He appears to be very drunk.

Arthur Kirkland: So, what are you doing here?

Jay Porter: I came to ask you a question.
Arthur Kirkland: Yeah, what?
Jay Porter: I'm a good lawyer, right?
Arthur Kirkland: Right.
Jay Porter: I got Earl Soames off. Right?
Arthur Kirkland: What are you talking about, Jay?
Jay Porter: I got Earl Soames.
Arthur Kirkland: Yeah, you got him off.
Jay Porter: No, no. I didn't just get him off. I got him off on murder. And we all know that Mr.Soames did it. Right, he did it, Jay. He waS guilty.
Arthur Kirkland: We all know that.
Jay Porter: Brilliant defense.
Jay Porter: Brilliant!
Jay Porter: Brilliant defense, Arthur.
Arthur Kirkland: Brilliant. Right.
Jay Porter: Brilliant!
Arthur Kirkland: Right.
Jay Porter: Brilliant!
Jay Porter: I got him off on a technicality.
Arthur Kirkland: I know, Jay. Right. Good.
Jay Porter: Mr. Soames did it again.
Arthur Kirkland: What do you mean?
Jay Porter: At 12:00 tonight, he went out and he killed two kids.
Arthur Kirkland: Jesus.
Jay Porter: I mean, he killed kids, you see.

This is the point where Jay Porter started to get nuts. He was morally affected by defending a murderer. He defended a murderer and got away with it thru a technicality just like what
Slayer had mentioned on their song Dittohead.

"Anyone can be set free,
On a technicality,
Explain the law again to me".

Tom Araya of Slayer

Jay felt his conscience bothering him for protecting guilty people (like Soames) which after fleeing the court, killed 2 kids. He was deeply affected by it. What happened next? Jay Porter shaved his head. He was bald and bringing battery-operated razor at the court room shaving his head and starting to postpone his court hearings. And then the height of his lunacy went on getting a bunch of plates from the cafeteria and throwing it everyone who approaches him.
A lawyer gone crazy.!!!

Jay
Porter gone crazy!!!

There are other lot of memorable court scenes in the movie including court negotiations, "nickel and dime scenarios" and the case of the Judge caught raping and abusing a woman which Arthur Kirkland had no choice but defend the guilty judge. The other cases of Arthur Kirkland are also interesting. (the Ralph Agee and Jeff McCullaugh cases) Overall, I gave it 10 stars though the music used was very poor. What can we expect? It's a 1979 classic movie.

Album and song

...And Justice For All
album by Metallica is their 4th studio album (1988) which is quite a complex structured album. It is Metallica's first album after the death of their bassist Cliff Burton. They replaced him with Jason Newsted from Flotsam and Jetsam band. The album discusses about political and social issues. It can clearly be seen on the album cover featuring the Lady justice being tied by the rope while trying to equally balance the justice scale. This album also came with the first Metallica music video ONE which in turn, frustrating a lot of their metal fans.

...And Justice For All song has quite a direct lyrics attacking the corrupt legal system which reminded of me of the corrupt legal system here in the Philippines. Even a former President (Joseph Estrada) have mentioned about the hoodlums in robe. Recently, The Philippines has been labeled as the most corrupt country in Asia. You can ask President Gloria Arroyo and Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales about it.

The song is quite a long track with a total running time of 9:44 minutes.
The lyrics is a direct attack and I believe no further explanation needed.
I believe that James Hettfield was inspired by the movie of the same title and
then wrote this song.

...And Justice for All (Nominations)

The Metallica album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance in 1989

The movie was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Pacino) and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Curtin and Levinson). It also received a Golden Globe nomination for Pacino's lead acting performance.

"...And Justice For All"

Halls of justice painted green
Money talking
Power wolves beset your door
Hear them stalking
Soon you'll please their appetite
They devour
Hammer of justice crushes you
Overpower

The ultimate in vanity
Exploiting their supremacy
I can't believe the things you say
I can't believe
I can't believe the price you pay

Nothing can save you
Justice is lost
Justice is raped
Justice is gone

Pulling your strings
Justice is done
Seeking no truth
Winning is all
Find it so grim
So true
So real

Apathy their stepping stone
So unfeeling
Hidden deep animosity
So deceiving
Through your eyes their light burns
Hoping to find
Inquisition sinking you
With prying minds

The ultimate in vanity
Exploiting their supremacy
I can't believe the things you say
I can't believe
I can't believe the price you pay
Nothing can save you

Justice is lost
Justice is raped
Justice is gone
Pulling your strings
Justice is done

Seeking no truth
Winning is all
Find it so grim
So true
So real

Lady justice has been raped
Truth assassin
Rolls of red tape seal your lips
Now you're done in

Their money tips her scales again
Make your deal
Just what is truth? I cannot tell
Cannot feel

The ultimate in vanity
Exploiting their supremacy
I can't believe the things you say
I can't believe
I can't believe the price we pay

Nothing can save you
Justice is lost
Justice is raped
Justice is gone

Pulling your strings
Justice is done
Seeking no truth
Winning is all
Find it so grim
So true
So real

Seeking no truth
Winning is all
Find it so grim
So true
So real
